Definition: derivation of a word from a root which formed a special feature of the Nairukta school of Vedic scholars in ancient times; the word निर्वचन is used in the same sense: cf. सति संभवे व्युत्पत्तिरन्यथा कर्तव्या रूढेरनियमात् Kas. on P.V. 2.93.
