Description:

The anunâsika is optionally the substitute of an ((aṇ)) vowel which occurs in a Pause, and is not a Pragṛihya. Source: Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.0

A substitute nasalized vowel (ánu-nāsika-ḥ) [optionally 56] replaces vowel phoneme-class a, i, u (aṆ¹-aḥ) [in pausa 53] when they are not prolated (á-pra-gr̥h-ya-sya) [in continuous utterance 2.1.8].
