A short vowel is substituted in the Voc. Sg, for the ((ā)) of the feminine, in the sense of 'mother, mother-dear', as well as for the long vowel of the Feminines called Nadû (1.4.3 &c). Source: Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.0

A substitute short (hrasvá-ḥ: vowel 1.2.28) replaces [the áṅga 6.4.1 final 1.1.52 vowel of nominal stems 4.1.1] denoting the sense of ambā `mother' as well as stems denoted by the t.t. nadī (1.4.3ff.)
