The lengthening of the vowel takes place in the case of a stem ending in a vowel, as well as of ((han)) and ((gam)), when the Desiderative affix ((san)) being jhalâdi (i. e. not taking the augment ((iṭ))) follows. Source: Aṣṭādhyāyī 2.0

[A substitute long vowel 3.111 replaces the áṅga 1 final 1.1.52 vowel of the pre-affixal 1 verbal stems ending in 1.1.72] a vowel (aC-°) and han- `hurt, kill' (II 2), gam- `go' (1.1.31) [before 1.1.66 the desiderative marker] saN [beginning with non-nasal consonant (jha̱L) 15].
