prātipādikāt prakṛtāvabhidheyāyāṃ yathāvihitaṃ pratyayo bhavati. tadartham iti
pratyayārthaviśeṣaṇam. taditi sarvanāmnā vikṛtiḥ parāmṛśyate. vikṛtyarthāyāṃ
prakṛtau pratyayaḥ. tadarthagrahaṇena prakṛterananyārthatā ākhyāyate. na
prakṛtivikārasambhavam ātre pratyayaḥ, kiṃ tarhi, prakṛterananyārthatve vivakṣite.
pratyayārthasya ca tadarthatve sati sāmarthyāl labhyā caturthī samarthavibhaktiḥ. kecit
tu tasmai hitam 5-1-5 ityanuvartayanti. aṅgārebhyo hitāni etāni kāṣṭhāni
aṅgārīyāṇi kāṣṭhāni. prākārīyā iṣṭakāḥ. śaṅkavyaṃ dāru. picavyaḥ kārpāsaḥ.
tadartham iti kim? yavānāṃ dhānāḥ. dhānānāṃ saktavaḥ. prakṛtyantaranivṛttiratra
vivakṣitā na tādarthyam dhānānāṃ saktavaḥ, na lājānām iti. vikṛteḥ iti kim?
udakārthaḥ kūpaḥ. vikṛtigrahaṇe 'kriyamāṇe yā kācit prakrtir gṛhyate, na
upādānakāraṇam eva. bhavati ca kūpa udakasya prakṛtiḥ, tatra utpādanāt. na tu udakaṃ tasyaḥ
vikṛtiḥ, atyantabhedāt prakṛtau iti kim? asyarthā kośī. asirayaso vikṛtir bhavati,
na tu kośī tasya prakṛtir bhavati. dvayorapi prakṛtivikṛtyor grahaṇe vivakṣitaḥ
prakṛtivikārabhāvo labhyate.

"vikṛtyarthāyām()" iti. anena tadarthamityatra subvyatyayena saptamyāḥ sthāne prathamā, liṅgavyatyayena ca strīliṅgasya sthāne napuṃsakaliṅgaṃ kṛtamiti darśayati. nanu ca chandasi vyatyaya uktaḥ, nedaṃ chandaḥ, tatkuto vyatyayaḥ? "chandovatsūtrāṇi bhavanti" (ma.bhā.1.1.1) ityadoṣaḥ. "tadartham()" iti. kimiti ṣaṣṭhī pratyudāhyiyate? ṣaṣṭha()ti tādathryaṃ brāūte, yathā--guroridaṃ gurvarthamiti. tathā sati ṣaṣṭha()pi samarthavibhaktirbhavati. aṅgārāṇāṃ kāṣṭhānīti pratyudāharaṇaṃ tu prakṛtyantaranivṛttyā, tayā yavādeḥ samarthyete. aṅgārebhyaḥ kāṣṭhāni, prākārebhya iṣṭakā iti. idamasati tadarthagrahaṇe na jñāyate kimarthaṃ vivakṣitamiti. tasmādananyārthatā prakṛtervivakṣiteti. etat? prayojanaṃ pratipādayituṃ tadarthagrahaṇaṃ kṛtamiti bhāvaḥ. tathā ca prakṛtyantaranivṛtyā prakṛtireva sambadhyamānā vyatiricyata iti yavādereva vyatirekavibhaktirbhavati. ye tu caturthīṃmanuvatrtayanti, teṣāṃ tadarathagrahaṇaṃ catarthīviśeṣaṇaṃ vijñāyate--tādarthye caturthīti. tatra mūtrāya kalpate yavāgūriti pratyudāharaṇam(). teṣāṃ catuthryanuvṛttirapārthikā; tadarthagrahaṇenaiva gatārthatvāt(). tathā ca yā tādathryasamānārthā ṣaṣṭhī sā cāsatyāṃ viśeṣyate. "na tu kośī tasya prakṛtiḥ" iti. atatkāraṇatvāt(), anutpattyādhārabhūtatvācca. nanu ca prakṛtirvikṛtiriti sambandhiśabdāvetau. sambandhiśabdaśca niyata eva pratiyogini pratītimupajanayati, yathā hi--"mātarivarttitavyam()" ityukte na cocyate "svasyāṃ mātari" iti, yā yasyā mātā tasyāmiti pratīyate. evaṃ sati kūpalakṣaṇāyāṃ prakṛtau vikṛtyarthāyāṃ pratyayārthatvena vivakṣitāyāmasatyapi vikṛtagrahaṇe tasyaiva kūpasya yā yā vikṛtistata eva pratyayo vijñāyate. tathā ca vikāravācino'siśabdāt? pratyaye vidhitsite yasyāsau prakṛtistasyāmeva tadarthāyāṃ prakṛtāvasatyapi prakṛtigrahaṇe pratyayo vijñāyate. tasmādanyataropādāne'pi sarvamiṣṭaṃ sampadyate. na kiñcidaniṣṭamāpadyata ityāha--"tadarthaṃ dvayorapi" ityādi. anenaivaṃ manyate--syādetadeva yadāsau prakṛtivikṛtiśabdau niyogataḥ sambandhiśabdau, na cemau niyogataḥ sambandhiśabdau. tathā hiṃ, vipūrvastāvadayaṃ karotiṃrastyevāpakāre--devadatto'sthityai vikarotīti; asti ceṣṭānānātve--vikurvate cchātrā iti; astyanaucitye--vikṛtireṣā strīṇāṃ yat? svātantryamiti. asti kārye--tantunāṃ paṭo vikāra iti. tatā prapūrvo'pyayamasti kāraṇe--tantavaḥ prakṛtiḥ paṭasyeti; a()sta caudāsīnye--sattvānāṃ prakṛtiriti. tānyucyante yānyanārambhakāṇi; asti doṣāpagame--prakṛtisto'yamiti. asti svabhve-prakṛtyā'bhirūpa iti; asti dharmāṇāmutpattyādhāre, yathā-darśapaurṇamāsau dharmāṇāṃ prakṛtistho'yamiti. asati svabhāve-prakṛtyā'bhirūpa iti; asti dharmāṇāmutpattyādhāre, yathā-darśapaurṇamāsau dharmāṇāṃ prakṛtiriti. tadevamarthabahutvādanayoḥ sarmbāndhatvamanaikāntikamiti, ato'nyataragrahaṇe na sidhyati. na cānyatareṇa śakyate vaktuṃ vivakṣitaḥ prakṛtivikārabhāvaḥ. ayamupādānakāraṇasya taduttarāvasthābhūtasya ca yo vikāraḥ sa iha veditavyaḥ. yadi tu vipūrvaḥ karotiranekārthaḥ, "tasya vikāraḥ" (4.3.134) ityatrāpi sandehāpagamāya tarhi prayatitavyam()? satyametat(); śailīyamācāryasya yasya kvacidabhidhānamāśrayati, kvacannyāyam(), kvacidvacanamiti tat? sarvamucyate. tena sarvaṃ pratyāyyate॥
