svārthikapratyayāvadhiścāyam adhikāraḥ, prāgdiśo vibhaktiḥ 5-3-1 iti vāvat.
svārthikeṣu hyasya upayogo na asti, vikalpo 'pi tatra anavasthitaḥ. kecin nityam
eva bhavanti. lakṣaṇavākyāni tasya apatyam 4-1-92, tena raktaṃ rāgāt 4-2-1 tatra bhavaḥ 4-3-53 ityevam ādīni bhaviṣyanti. teṣu sāmarthye sati prathamanirdiṣṭādeva
vikalpena pratyayo bhavati iti veditavyam. samarthānām iti virdhāraṇe ṣaṣṭhī.
samarthānāṃ madye prathamaḥ pratyayaprakṛtitvena nirdhāryate. tasya iti sāmānyaṃ
viśeṣalakṣaṇārtham. tadīyaṃ prāthamyaṃ viśeṣāṇāṃ vijñāyate. upagoḥ apatyam aupagavaḥ.
samarthānām iti kim? kambala upagoḥ, apatyaṃ devadattasya. prathamātiti kim?

samarthānāṃ prathamādvā. , 4.1.82 "svārthikapratyayavadhiścāyamadhikāraḥ"iti. svārthe prakṛtyarthe bhavāḥ svārthikāḥ , adhyātmāditvāṭ(vā.456) ṭhañ. svārthikāḥ pratyayā avadhirmaryādā yasya sa tathoktaḥ. "prāgdiśo vibhaktiriti yāvat" iti. anena yataḥ pareṇa svārthikāḥ pratyayā avadhibhūtāḥ pravatrtante tatsūtraṃ darśayan "prāgdiśo vibhaktiḥ" 5.3.1 ityetatsūtrāt prāgayamadhikāra icyācaṣṭe. kiṃ punaḥ kāraṇaṃ svārthikeṣvayamapyadhikāro na pravatrtate? ityāha-- "svārthikeṣu" ityādi. iha prathamāditi viśeṣaṇaṃ prayogavākyasya? lakṣamavākyasya vā? yadi prathamaḥ ,tato laukike vākye padānāṃ prayoge niyamo nāstīti; pātramāhara, āhara pātramiti prayogāt. tataśca yadāpatyamupagoriti prayujyate tadāpatyaśabdāt prathamāsāmathryāt pratyayaḥ syāt. nanu ca tasyetanena sūtropāttenānukaraṇapadena ṣaṣṭha()ntena prathamenālaukikavākyasamavāyi paścānnirdiṣṭamapi padamanukṛtam, tat prathamatvāt prathamavyapadeśamāsādayati. tena yadāpyapatyamupagoriti laukikaṃ vākyaṃ prayujyate, tadopaguśabdādeva yathoktenaiva prakāreṇa labdhaprathamavyapadeśāt pratyayo bhaviṣyati; nāpatyaśabdāt. tadādye'pi pakṣe samāśrīyamāṇe na doṣa iti cet? vātrtametat; na hi mukhye prathame sambhavapisati gauṇasya grahaṇaṃ yuktam. ataḥ satyapyupaguśabdasya gauṇena prathamatve mukhyāt prathamādapatyaśabdādeva pratyayaḥ syāt, nopaguśabdāt. pratipattigauravañca. dvitīye tu pakṣa eva doṣo nāvatarati; lakṣamavākyeṣu padānāṃ prayogasya niyatvāt. atastamāśrityāha-- "lakṣaṇavākyāni" ityādi. samarthānāṃ madhye prathamaḥ pratyayaprakṛtitvena nirdhārita iti, yathā-- kṛṣṇā gavāṃ sampannakṣīratameti, gavāṃ madhye kṛṣṇā gauḥ sampannakṣīratamātvena. yadi tarhi samarthānāṃ prathamāt pratyayo bhavati, evaṃ sati "tasyāpatyam" 4.1.92 ityatra tasyetyetatsarvanāma. sāmānyavāci prathamaṃ nirdiṣṭamiti sāmānyavācina eva pratyayaḥ syāt, na viśeṣavācinaḥ; prātipadikādupagvityādeḥ, na hi tallakṣamavākye prathamaṃ nirdiṣṭam? ityata āha--"tasya" ityādi. "viśeṣalakṣaṇārtham" iti. viśeṣopalakṣaṇārthamityarthaḥ. yadi hi tasyetyedviśeṣopalakṣaṇārthaṃ na syāt tadā samarthatā tasya na syāt. na hi tasyetyetat prakaraṇādyanapekṣaṃ viśeṣeṣvatiṣṭhachate. na ca viśeṣeṣvanavasthitenānenāpatyasya kaścidupakāraḥ kṛto bhavati; sambandhisāmānyasya sambandhiśabdatvāt, apatyaśabdenaiva gamitatvāt. tataścopākārabhāvāt samarthatā na syāt. ucyatecedam-- tasyeti. tasmāt sāmathryādviśeṣopalakṣaṇārthatvaṃ tasyetyasya. tena ye viśeṣā upalakṣitāḥ = pratipaditānte sambandhyantaravyavacchedena viśiṣṭaṃ sambandhinaṃ pratipādayanta upakāriṇo bhavantītyupapadyate taiḥ saha sāmathryam. tasmāt tasyetat sāmānyaṃ viśeṣopalakṣaṇārthaṃ draṣṭavyam. tena tasya yat prāthamyaṃ tadviśeṣāṇāmupaguśabdādīnāṃ vijñāyate. tataśca tata eva pratyayo bhavati, na ca sāmānyavācinaḥ.
"kambala upagorapatyaṃ devadattasya" iti. atropaguśabdaḥ kambalena saha sambaddhaḥ, nāpatyena. apatyaśabdasyāpi devadattaśabdena, nopaguśabdena. tasmādapatyaśabdena, sahopaguśabdasya sambandho nāstīti na tataḥ pratyayo bhavati.
"vākyamapi hi yathā syāt" iti. asati hi vāgrahaṇe vākyenāpatyasyābhidhāne prāptetasminnarthe vidhīyamānaḥ pratyayastannivatrtayet. nanu ca samāne'rthe śāstrānvito'śāstrānvitasya nivatrtako bhavati, yathā-- "gamerḍoḥ" (da.u.2.11) ityanena śāstrānvito gośabdo'śāstrānvitasya gāvīśabdas samānārthasyaiva, na tu bhinnārthasya ḍitthādeḥ. na ca vṛttivākyayoḥ samāno'rthaḥ, vṛttau hrekārthībhāvaḥ sāmathryam, vākye tu vyapekṣā? naitadevam; satyapi hretasminnarthabhede pradhānārtho na bhidyate, tathā hi-- upagorapatyamānayetyukte ya evārtho'patyātyavatsambandhaviśiṣṭaḥ sa ānīyate. aupagavamānayetyukte sa eva. pradhānāpekṣayaiva ca samānārthaḥ śāstranvito'śāstrānvitaṃ nivatrtayati, anyathā hi gośabdo'pi gāvīśabdaṃ na nivatrtayet. asti hi tayorapyarthabhedaḥ, tathā hi-- gośabdo gotvamācaṣṭe, gāvīśabdastu tathā, aśāstriyatvañca. tasmādasati vāgrahaṇe yathā gośabdaḥ satyapyapradhānārthabhede pradhānārthasya samānarthādgāvīśabdaṃ nivatrtayati, tathā taddhito'pi śāstrānvito'śāstranvitaṃ vākyaṃ nivatrtayet. tasmādvākyamapi yathā syāditi vāgrahaṇaṃ kriyate.
