sā ca jātiḥ-- "sakṛdākhyātanigrrāhrā" iti. sakṛt = ekavāram, ākhyātā = upadiṣṭā, nigrrāhrā = niścayena grāhrā. etena jātidharmānekatvanityatvapratyekaparisamāptitvalakṣaṇān darśayati. sakṛdevāraṃ yasmāt kṛṣṇe dhavale vā gopiṇḍa ākhyātā tadvilakṣaṇe'pi gopiṇḍe nigrrāhrā, tasmādeva nityā pratyekaṃ parisamāptā ca. yadi hrekā na syāt, sakṛdākhyātā gauriti piṇḍāntare na gṛhreta. yadi ca nityā na bhavet, piṇḍavināśe tasyā api vināśāt piṇḍāntareṇa na gṛhreta. yadi ca pratyekaṃ sarvātmanā parisamāptā na syāt, tasminnapi tāvat piṇḍe sarvātmanā na gṛhreta yatrākhyātā, kiṃ punaḥ piṇḍāntare ! aṃśena hi parisamāptau satyāmaṃśa eva parigṛhrate, na jātiḥ. najātyaṃśo jātirbhavati, anekatvaprasaṅgāt.
tṛtīyaṃ jātilakṣamamāha-- "gotrañca" ityādi. "apatyaṃ pautraprabhṛti gotram" 4.1.162 iti gotraṃ pāribhāṣikam. iha tu laukikamapi gotramapatyamātraṃ gṛhrate. caraṇamadhyayanabhedenānekadhā. gotrañca caraṇaiḥ saha jātirbhavati. gotraṃ nāḍāyanādi. yadyapi nāḍāyanatādi sāmānyaṃ gotravadeva kalpyate, tathāpi tat saṃsthānavyaṅgyaṃ na bhavati. sarvaliṅgabhāvaktvācca-- nāḍāyanaḥ pumān, nāḍāyanī strī, nāḍāyanaṃ napuṃsakamiti. ato gotrasya jātitvapratipādanasiddhaye gotrañcetyuktam. caraṇaśabdastvadhyayanakriyāsambandhena pravṛttatvāt. kriyāśabda eva jātiśabda ityatastadarthasya jātitvaptipādanāya caraṇaiḥ sahetyuktam.
"kukkuṭī, śūkarī mayūrī" iti. ākṛtigrahaṇāyā jāterudāharaṇam. "brāāhṛṇī, vṛṣalī" iti. asarvaliṅgabhājaḥ. "nāḍāyanī, cārāyaṇī" iti. gotralakṣaṇāyāḥ. naḍacaraśabdayoḥ "naḍādibhyaḥ phak" 4.1.99 iti phagapatye'rthe. "kaṭhī, bahvṛcī" iti. caraṇalakṣaṇayāḥ.
"muṇḍā"iti. muṇḍaguṇayogāt. muṇḍo bhavatyeṣa ityastrīviṣayaḥ-- muṇḍo devadatta iti; puruṣe'pi muṇḍaśabdasya vṛtteḥ. na tu jātiśabdaḥ,kiṃ tarhi? guṇaśabdaḥ."makṣikā" iti. sarvadā striyāmeva niyatvāt strīviṣayo makṣikāśabdaḥ. "kṣattriyā" iti. gotramiha jātiḥ. "kṣattrāddhaḥ" 4.1.138 iti gotrāpatye ghavidhānādaruāvaliṅgabhāktvācca jātittvam. "kṣattriyaḥ" iti ca puṃsyapi vṛtterastrīviṣayaḥ kṣattriyaśabdaḥ.
yopadhastu-- "yopadhapratiṣedhe hayagavayamukatsyamanuṣyāṇāmapratiṣedhaḥ" iti. kathaṃ punareṣa labhyate? uttarasūtre cakāsyānuktasamuccayārthatvāt. tena hi hayagavayādibhyo ṅīṣvidhānādayaṃ pratiṣedho na pravatrtate. "matsī" iti. "sūryatiṣyāgastyamatsyānām" 6.4.149 ita yalopaḥ. "manuṣī" iti. na ca striyāṃ niyatamiti. strī viṣayaḥ=niyamena vācyā yasyā iti bahuvrīhiṇā
strīviṣayaśabdo niyatastrīliṅgaparaḥ. tathā ca `astrīviṣayā'dityanena
aniyatastrīliṅgāditi vivakṣitam, naiyatyalābhāyaiva viṣayagrahaṇam. anyathā `astriyā'
ityevāvakṣyaditi bhāvaḥ. nanu yadi `nityamekamanekānugataṃ sāmānya'miti tārkikoktā
jātistarhi śuklādiguṇasya nityatvaikatvapakṣe śukletyādāvativyāptiḥ, aupagavī
kaṭhītyādāvavyāptiśca. `savarṇebhyaḥ savarṇāsu jāyante hi sajātayaḥ' ityādismṛtyā
jananena yat prāpyate brāāhṛṇatvādi sā jātiścedyuvatvādāvavyāptiḥ. tathā ca

sarvāsu ghaṭāditattadvyaktiṣu ekarūpatattadākāravyaṅgyeti yāvat. gṛhrate iti
karmaṇi lyuṭ, ākṛtyā grahaṇā ākṛtigrahaṇeti tu na vyākhyeyam, `ṭiḍḍhāṇañ'iti
ṅīpprasaṅgāt. taṭīti. `taṭaṃ triṣu' ityamaraḥ. jalasamīpapradeśa
ākṛtiviśeṣaviśiṣṭastaṭaḥṣa atastaṭatvamākṛtivyaṅgyatvājjātiḥ, atastaṭaśabdasya
jātivācitvādiniyatastrīliṅgatvādayopadhatvācca ṅīṣiti bhāvaḥ.

jātitvaṃ na syāt, tadavayavasaṃniveśasya brāhāhṛṇādisādhāraṇatvena vṛṣalatvādīnāṃ
tadvyaṅgyatvā'bhāvādityāśaṅkyāha-liṅgānāṃ ca na sarvabhāk.
sakṛdākhyātanigrrāhreti. `anyā jāti'riti śeṣaḥ. liṅgānāmiti karmaṇī ṣaṣṭhī.
sarvāṇi liṅgāni na bhajate ityarthaḥ. nigrrāhretyasya vyaktyantare upadeśaṃ
vināpi sugametyarthaḥ, nirityupasapargavaśāt. nigrrāhretyanantaram-`anyā
jāti'riti śeṣaḥ. phalitamāha–asarveti. ekasyāmiti. ekasyāṃ vyaktau vṛṣala
ityupadeśādvyaktyantare tadupadeśaṃ vināpi sugameti yāvat. lakṣaṇāntaramiti.
jātyantamityarthaḥ. anyathoktataṭatvādijātereva `ākṛtigrahaṇā jātiḥ'
ityuktalakṣaṇādanyadidaṃ lakṣaṇamiti syāt, nahīdaṃ yujyate, taṭasya sarvaliṅgatvāt.
vṛṣalīti. vṛṣalatvaṃ hrasarvaliṅgaṃ, napuṃsakatvā'bhāvāt, ekasyāṃ vyaktau vṛṣalatve
upadiṣṭe sati tadapatyasahodarādiṣu tadupadeśaṃ vinā tasya
sugrahatvātsakṛdākhyātanigrrāhraṃ ceti bhāvaḥ. brāāhṛṇatvaṃ tu putrapautrādau
yadyapi na sugamaṃ, brāāhṛṇātkṣatriyāyāmutpannasya brāāhṛṇatvā'bhāvāt, tathāpi
pitrādau sugamameva. evaṃ kṣatriyatvaṃ vaiśyatvaṃ ca tatpitrādāveva sugraham.
satyantaṃ kimiti. asarvaliṅgatve satīti kimarthamityarthaḥ. śukleti. `balāke'ti
śeṣaḥ. `guṇe śuklādayaḥ puṃsi guṇiliṅgāstu tadvati' iti kośādviśeṣyanighnatayā
triliṅgatvādasarvaliṅgatvā'bhāvācchuklatvaṃ na jātiḥ.
avayavasaṃsthānavyaṅgyatvā'bhāvānna pūrvalakṣaṇamapi. devadatteti. saṃjñātvena
napuṃsakaliṅgahīnatayā asarvaliṅgatve'pi na sakṛdākhyātanigrrāhratvamiti bhāvaḥ. anena
dvitīyalakṣaṇena janananimittakabrāāhṛṇatvādijātisaṅgrahaḥ.\t
kaṭhītyādyasaṅgrahaḥ, aupagavatvāderanugatasaṃsthānavyaṅgyatvā'bhāvāt,

gotraśabdena apatyaṃ vivakṣitaṃ, natu pautraprabhṛtīti paribhāṣikaṃ, vyākhyānāt. ata
evānantarāpatyapratyayānte avantītyatra jātiprayukto ṅīṣiti `anupasarjanā'diti
sūtrasthabhāṣyaṃ saṅgacchate. śabdenduśekhare tu pāribhāṣikameva gotramiha vivakṣitamiti
prapañcitam. caraṇaśabdastu śākhādhyetari prasiddhaḥ. caraṇaiḥ saha gotraṃ jātiriti
labhyate. gotraṃ caraṇāśca jātiriti yāvat. yadyapi anugatākārapratyayavedyā
jananaviśeṣaprayuktā ceti dvividhaiva jātirloke prasiddhā. tatra gotracaraṇā
nāntarbhavanti. tathāpi `?ta\ufffdsmastacchabdastadvāciṣu śabdeṣu tatkāryārtha'
ityabhipretya vyācaṣṭe–apatyapratyayānta ityādinā. gotramudāharati–aupagavīti.
upagorapatyaṃ strītyarthe `tasyāpatya'mityaṇi `ṭiḍḍhāṇa'ñiti ṅīpaṃ bādhitvā
paratvādanena ṅīṣ. svare bhedaḥ. caramamudāharati–kaṭhīti. kaṭhena proktamadhīyānetyarthaḥ.
kalāpīti vaiśampāyanāntevāsitvanibandhano ṇiniḥ. `kaṭhacarakāllu'giti tasya luk. tataḥ
`tadadhīte'ityaṇaḥ `proktāllu'giti luk, tato ṅīṣ. caraṇaviṣaye udāharaṇāntaramāha–
vahvṛcīti. bahava ṛco'dhyeyā yasyā iti vigrahaḥ. `ṛkpūrabdhūḥpathāmānakṣe'
`anṛcabahvṛcāvadhyetaryeva' ityacsamāsāntaḥ, tato ṅīṣ. `purā kalpe tu nārīṇāṃ
mauñjībandhanamiṣyate. adhyāpanaṃ ca vedānāṃ sāvitrīvacanaṃ tathā.' iti yamādismṛtiḥ. nanu
`liṅgānāṃ ca na sarvabhāk' iti `gotraṃ ca caraṇaiḥ sahe'ti ca jātilakṣaṇe brāāhṛṇīti
parityajya vṛṣalī aupagavītyeva kuta udāhmatamityata āha–brāāhṛṇītyatreti.
brāhṛṇo'patyamityarthe `tasyāpatyam' ityaṇi `brāāhṛo'jātau' #iti ṭilopā'bhāve
ādivṛddhau brāāhṛṇaśabdaḥ. striyāṃ tu jātilakṣaṇaṃ ṅīṣaṃ bādhitvā `śāṅrgaravādyaño
ṅī'niti ṅīn, śāṅrgaravādigaṇe tatpāṭhasya niravakāśatvāditi bhāvaḥ. tadevaṃ
jātisvarūpamukttvā ṅīṣvidhau tadgrahaṇasya prayojanaṃ pṛcchati–jāteḥkimiti
muṇḍeti. muṇḍatvaṃ nāma viluptasarvakeśatvam. tattu nākṛtivyaṅgyaṃ, keśadaśāyāmapi
tadākṛteḥ sattvāt. nāpi `liṅgānāṃ ce'ti lakṣaṇalakṣitaṃ, sarvaliṅgatvāt. nāpi
gotracaraṇāntarbhūtaṃ, ato na jātiriti bhāvaḥ. astrīviṣayātkimiti. viṣayagrahaṇalabhyaṃ
niyatatvaṃ prava#eśya aniyatastrīliṅgāditi kimarthamityarthaḥ. balāketi. pakṣivarge
`balākā visakaṇṭhikā' ityamaraḥ. balākātvasya ākṛtivyaṅgyatayā jātitve'pi
niyatastrīliṅgatvānna ṅīṣityarthaḥ. yadyapi balāṃ kāyatīti yaugikatve
triliṅgatvamasti, tathāpi
pravṛttinimittaikyastrīliṅgānyaliṅgarahitabhinnādityartho vivahitam.
kṣatriyeti. `liṅgānāṃ ca na sarvabhā'giti jātilakṣaṇasattve'pi yopadhatvānna ṅīṣiti
bhāvaḥ.

gosadṛśaścatuṣpājjātiviśeṣaḥ. mukayīti. catuṣpājjātiviśeṣaḥ. hala iti.
manuṣyaśabdātstriyāṃ ṅīṣi manuṣya-ī iti sthite `halastaddhitasye'ti yakārasya lope
`yasyeti ce'tyakāralope manuṣīti rūpamityarthaḥ. `halastaddhitasye'ti lopapravṛttaye
yakārasya taddhitāvayavatvaṃ darśayitumāha–manorjātāviti.
