iha ca strītvaṃ pratyācāryāṇāṃ darśanabhedaḥ, kvacicca darśane doṣo dṛśyate. tatra keṣāñciddarśanam--
"stanakaśavatī strī syāllomaśaḥ puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ.
ubhayorantaraṃ yacca tadabhāve napusaṃkam॥ iti.
"stanakeśavatī" iti, bhūmnyatiśāyane vā matup. "lomaśaḥ" ityatrāpi lomādipāmādisūtreṇa 5.2.99 śapratyayaḥ. "ubhayorantaram" iti, ubhayoḥ strīpuṃsayoḥ sadṛśamityarthaḥ. tatpunaḥ sādṛśyaṃ liṅgavatvena. evaṃ tarhi tadubhayaṃ samuditaṃ yatra tannapuṃsakaṃ prāpnoti. bhavati hi samudāyarūpaṃ samudāyirūpeṇa liṅigatvena sadṛśamityata āha-- "tadabhāve" iti. etadubhayaṃ yatra nāsti tat "napuṃsakam" iti. tena na sambhavatyeṣa doṣaḥ. yadi tadabhāve napuṃsakamityetaducyate, tato'vyayānāṃ tiṅantānāñcaiva napuṃsakatvaṃ syāt. tathāpyubhayorantaraṃ yadityetāvaducyate, evamapi kukkuṭamayūryau ityevamādīnāṃ liṅgasamudāyamatāṃ samudāyānāṃ napuṃsakatvaṃ prasajyeta. tasmādubhayorantaraṃ yat tadabhāva iti ca dvayamapyuktam. tadevaṃ yanna strī na pumān liṅgavacca vastu tannapuṃsakamityucyate, tato'vyayānāṃ tiṅantānācañca napuṃsakatvaṃ na bhavatītyuktaṃ bhavati. atra darśane bhrṛkuṃse ca ṭāp prasajyate, tasay hi stanakeśasambandha upalabhyate. bhrṛkuṃsaḥ strīveśadhārī nartakaḥ, puruṣa ucyate. khaṭvādīnāñca stanakeśābhāvāt strītvaṃ na syāt, vṛkṣādīnāñca lomaśatvābhāvāt kuṃstvābhāvaḥ prāpnoti, kharakuṭa()ādīnāñca lomaśatvāt puṃstvam, tataśca kharakuṭīḥ paśyeti "tasmācchaso naḥ puṃsi" 6.1.99 iti natvamāpadyeta.
anyeṣāṃ tu darśanam-- saṃstyānam, prasavaḥ, sthitiśceti. saṃstyānam-- apacayasvabhāvaṃ strītvam, tadyatrāsti so'rthaḥ strī. prasavaḥ = upacayātmakaḥ puṃstvam, tadyatrāsti sa pumān. upacayāpacayarahitā yā'vasthā tadātmikā sthitirnapuṃsakatvam, tadyatrāsti tannapuṃsakamiti. atrāpi darśane saṃstyānādestrayasya sarvatra bhāvādekaikaṃ vastu strī, pumān, napuṃsakañca prasajyeta. saṃstyānavivakṣyāyāmeva strītvaṃ bhavati, prasavavivakṣāyāmeva puṃstvam, sthitivivakṣāyāmeva napuṃsakatvam, ato'yamadoṣa iti cet? ayuktametat; tathā hi-- upacīyate kumārītyapi kumārī strī bhavati, na pumān. apacīyate vṛkṣa iti saṃstyānavivakṣāyāmapi vṛkṣaḥ pumāneva bhavati, na strī. #upacīyate kuṇḍamapacīyate vetyupacayāpacayayoranyataravivakṣāyāmapi kuṇḍaṃ napuṃsakameva bhavati, na pumān nāpi strī.
tadevamācāryāṇāṃ strītvaṃ prati darśanabhedāddoṣadarśanācca pṛcchati-- "striyāmityucyate,keyaṃ strī" ityādi. vṛttikārastu viditābhiprāyo darśanāntaramāśrityāha-- "sāmānyaviśeṣāḥ" ityādi. sāmānyāni viśeṣāśceti. tathā sāmānyāni ca tāni tulyajātīpadārthasādhāraṇatvādviśeṣāśca parasparato vijātīyebhyaśca viśiṣyante = vyāvatryanta iti sāmānyaviśeṣāḥ. "strītvādayo gotvādaya iva" iti. yathaiva hi gotvādayaḥ sāmānyaviśeṣā bhinneṣva pi svāśrayeṣvabhinnākārabuddhyabhidhānahetavastathā strītvādayo'pi. yathaiva hi gotvādayastulyajātīyeṣu sarveṣu vatrtante, vijātīyebhyastu vyāvatrtante, tathā strītvādayo'pi. tasmāt tadvadeva te'pi sāmānyaviśeṣāḥ. nanu ca sāmānyaviśeṣaṇāṃ sarvavyaktyanugatatvādasminnapi darśane sa eva sarvatra sarvaliṅgatāprasaṅgaḥ, tatkimiti darśanāntaramutsṛjyedaṃ darśanamāśritamityāha--"bahuhaprakārā vyaktayaḥ"iti. vyajanta ābhiriti vyaktavyaḥ--- sāmānyaviśeṣāṇāmāśrayāḥ. bahuprakārā vyaktayo yeṣāṃ sāmānyaviśeṣāṇāṃ te tathoktāḥ. anenaitat sūcayati-- vicitratvāt sāmānyaviśeṣāśrayāṇāṃ vyañjakānāṃ kaścideva sāmānyaviśeṣaḥ kenacidevāśrayeṇa vyajyate, na sarvaḥ sarveṇa. pratiniyataviṣayatvāt padārthaśaktīnām. tatra yenārthena strītvameva vyajyate na puṃstvaṃ nāpi napuṃsakatvam, sā stryeva bhavati, na pumān, nāpi napuṃsakam, yena puṃstvameva vyajyate sa pumāneva, yena napuṃsakatvaṃ tannapuṃsakameva. yastu dvayostrayāṇāṃ vā vyañjakaḥ sa dviliṅgastriliṅgo veṣyate-- ardharcaḥ, ardharcam; padmaḥ, padmam; taṭaḥ, kaṭī,taṭamiti. tena nāsmin darśane pūrvadoṣāvasaraḥ. yastarhi sāmānyaviśeṣasyāśrayo vyañjako na bhavati sa kathaṃ tadyogāt strī bhavati? pumān napuṃsakañceti?ata āha--kvacit" ityādi. āśātmākāśādiṣu hi sāmānyaviśeṣāḥ strītvādayaḥ kvacidupadeśamātravyaṅgyā eva, na tvāśrayavyaṅgyāḥ, tadāśrayāṇāmatīndriyatvāt. tatra yasminnupadeśena strītvaṃ vyajyate sā strī bhavati, yathā -- iyamāśeti. yatra puṃstvaṃ sa pumān, yathā--ayamātmeti. yatra napuṃsakatvaṃ tannapuṃsakameva, yathā--- idamākāśamiti. kathaṃ strītvādayaḥ kvacidupadeśamātravyaṅgyā bhavantītyāha-- "yathā" ityādi. brāāhṛṇatvakṣatriyatvādīnāṃ hi tathāvidha āśrayo nāsti yastānyabhivyañjayet; sāmānyaviśeṣāśrayāṇāmāśātmākāśādīnamatīndriyatvāt. tadāśrayaṇāmanyatra sādṛśyādupadeśamātrādeva tu brāāhṛṇatvādīnāmabhivyaktirbhavati. yathā ca teṣāṃ tathā ca kvacit strītvādīnām. kiṃ punaridaṃ strītvam? pratyayārthaḥ? uta prātipadikaviśeṣaṇam? ityāha-- "strītvañca" ityādi. yadā strīśabdo vinā'pi bhāvapratyayena strītve vatrtate tadā striyāmabhidheyāyāṃ ṭābādayo bhavantīti strītvaṃ pratyayārtho bhavati. yathaiva hi gośabdo jātipadārthapakṣe bhāvapratyayarahito'pi gotve vatrtate tathā strīśabdo'pi strītve. yadā tu strītvaṃ viśeṣaṇamupādāya tadvati dravye strīśabdo'pi vatrtate tadāyaṃ pakṣo'pi bhavati-- striyāṃ yat prātipadikaṃ vatrtate tasmāṭṭābādaya iti strītvaṃ prakṛterviśeṣaṇaṃ bhavati. "ubhayathā'pi yujyate" iti. kathaṃ punarubhayathā yujyate, yāvatā strītvasya pratyayārthatve strītvaṃ pradhānamāpadyata iti tatra vyatirekalakṣaṇā ṣaṣṭhī prāpnoti, yathā--strītvaṃ devadattāyā iti, tataśca kumārī devadatteti sāmānādhikaraṇyaṃ na syāt? dvivacane bahuvacane ca kumāryau kumārya iti na syātām, ekatvāt strītvasya? anekaśca pratyayo nopapadyate gārgāyaṇī, kārīṣagandhyā,kālitareti;ekatvāt strītvasya, tasya ca prathamotpannenaiva ṣphaṣyaṅādinābhihitatvāt? strīti ca īkāro na prāpnoti saṃstyāne "{strī ityeva mudritadaśapādyuṇādisūtrapāṭhe dṛṣyate} styāyaterḍraṭ" (paṃ.u.4.165) iti ḍraṭpratyayāntenābhidhīyate, yato vyatirekalakṣaṇā ṣaṣṭhī syāt. kasmāt na hi sāmānyaviśeṣāṇāmāśrayādbhedaḥ strīpratyayāntenābhidhīyate, yato vyatirekalakṣaṇā ṣaṣṭhī syāt. kasmāt punarnābhidhīyate? śabdaśaktisvābhāvyāt. dvivacanabahuvacane api copapadyate; yasmāt sāmānyaviśeṣāṇāmekatve'punarnābhidhīyate? śabdaśaktisvābhāvyāt. dvivacanabahuvacane api copapadyete; yasmāt sāmānyaviśeṣaṇāmekatve'pyāśrayasaṃkhyāstadvācina upādadate, śabdaśaktisvābhāvyādeva. tenāśrayasyānekatvāt dvivacanabahuvacane bhaviṣyataḥ. gāgryāyaṇītyevamādau dvābhyāmeva strīpratyayābhyāṃ strītvaṃ vyajyate. naikena ṣyaṅādinetyaneko'pi pratyayo yukta eva. atha vā-- gāgryāyaṇītyatra "prācāṃ ṣpha taddhitaḥ" 4.1.17) iti vihitasya ṣphasya ṣitkaraṇasāmathryāt ṅīṣ pratyayo bhaviṣyati. "kārīṣagandhyā" iti. ṣyaṅantāt "yaṅaścāp" 4.1.74 iti vacanasamāthryādaccābbhaviṣyati. "kālitarā" iti. jānapadādi 4.1.42 sūtravihitena ṅīṣā strītvamaprakarṣaviśiṣṭamuktam, na tu prakarṣaviśiṣṭam, atastasyānabhihitatvāt taravantāt ṭābbhaviṣyati. strīti "striyām"4.1.3 iti nirdeśālliṅgāṭṭitkaraṇasāmathryādvā ṅībbhaviṣyati. prakṛtyarthaviśeṣaṇapakṣe tu prātipadikena strītvaviśiṣṭaṃ dravyamevocyate, ṭābādayastu dyotakā iti. tatra vyatirekābhāvāt ṣaṣṭha()ā aprasaṅgādeva dvivacanabahuvacane api. anekatvāddravyasya yukte'neko'pi pratyayo yukta eva. yathaiva hi prātipadikenokte'pi strītve khaṭvetyādau ṭābādayo bhavanti, tathā gāgryāyaṇītyādāvaneke'pi ṣphādayo bhavanti. anenaiva strītvasya dyotitatvāditi yuktamuktam-- "ubhayathāpi yujyate" iti॥

sūtraṃ saprapañcaṃ nirūpya taduttarama-nukrāntānstrīpratyayānnirūpayitumāha-
striyām. adhikāro'yamiti. `ajādyataṣṭābityādyuttarasūtreṣvanuvṛttyarthamidaṃ
sūtraṃ, natu svatantravidhirityarthaḥ. kiyatparyantamayamadhikāra ityata āha–samartheti.
`yāva'dityavadhau. `samarthānāṃ prathamā'-dityataḥ prāgityarthaḥ. atredamavadheyam.
`stanakeśavatī strī syāllomaśaḥ puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ. ubhayorantaraṃ yacca tada bhāve
napuṃsakam.' iti lakṣaṇalakṣitamavayavasaṃsthānaviśeṣātmakaṃ laukikaṃ strīpuṃsayorliṅgam.
tadabhāve=tayorubhayorabhāve sati, yadubhayorantaraṃ=sadṛśaṃ tannapuṃsakamityarthaḥ. tadidaṃ laukikaṃ
liṅgamasmin śāstre nopayujyate, tasyā'cetane khaṭvāmālādau
bādhātstrīpratyayānāpatteḥ. dārānityādau `tasmācchaso naḥ puṃsī'ti
natvānāpatteśca. kiṃtu sattvarajastamasāṃ prākṛtaguṇānāṃ vṛddhiḥ–puṃstvam,
apacayaḥ–strītvam, sthitimātraṃ napuṃsakatvam. ata eva ūtkārṣāpakarṣaṃsatve'pi
sthitimātramādāya `sāmānye napuṃsaka'miti pravādaḥ.
utkarṣā'pakarṣasāmyātmakāvasthātrayasādhāraṇasthitimātravivakṣāyāṃ napuṃsakaṃ bhavatīti
tadarthaḥ. īdṛśamavasthātrayaṃ kevalānvayi. `ayaṃ padārthaḥ,' `iyaṃ vyaktiḥ', `idaṃ vastu'
iti vyavahārasya sārvatrikatvāt. taccedaṃ liṅgamarthaniṣṭhameva. taduktaṃ bhāṣye–
`ekārthe śabdānyatvāddṛṣṭaṃ liṅgānyatvamavayavānyatvācce'ti. ekasminnevārthe
`puṣyaḥ' `tārakā' `nakṣatra'miti śabdanānātvadarśanāt, kuṭīkuṭīrādau
rephādyavayavopajanane liṅgabhedadarśanācca stanakeśādyatiriktameva liṅgamityartha iti
kaiyaṭaḥ. `puliṅgaḥ śabda' ityādivyavahārastu vācyavācakayorabhedopacāradbodhyaḥ. naca
upacayādidharmāṇāṃ viruddhatvādekatra samāveśā'yogādekasya
dvitriliṅgatā'nāpattiriti vācyam, ekaikasminvastuni kṣaṇabhedena trayāṇāṃ
dharmāṇāmapi samāveśopapatteḥ. uktaṃca bhāṣye-`kaścidapi sattvādidharma
kvacinmuhurtamapi nāvatiṣṭhate, yāvadanena varddhitavyamapāyena vā yujyate' iti nacaivaṃ
sati yugapaddvitriliṅgatvānāpattiriti vācyam, nahi vyavahāre
svasamakālikapadārthasattā prayojikā. tathā sati bhūtabhaviṣyadvyavahārocchedāpātāt. tatra
kaścicchabda ekaliṅgaviśiṣṭa evārthe prayojyaḥ, kaścittu dviliṅge, kaścittu
triliṅge ityetattu liṅgānuśāsanaśāstrādavagantavyam. eṣāṃ
puṃstrīnapuṃsakaśabdānāṃ vṛddhyādiśabdavadasmin śāstre saṃketaśca liṅgānuśāsanata
eva jñeyaḥ. uktaṃ ca bhāṣye-avaśyaṃ tāvatkaścitsvakṛtānta āstheyaḥ' iti
vaiyakaraṇasiddhānta ityarthaḥ. `kṛtāntau yamasiddhāntau' ityamaraḥ. tatra
ṭighubhādisaṃjñāvallaghusaṃjñāmakṛtvā mahāsaṃjñākaraṇasāmathryātsati saṃbhave
`stanakeśavatī'tyādilaukikaṃ liṅgamapyatrāśrīyate. anyathā `paśunā yajete 'tyatra
strīvyaktāvapi sattvādyupacayātmakapuṃstvādyanapāyādāṅonā'striyāmiti
nābhāvasyā'virodhātstrīpaśurapyālabhyeta. tadetaccaturthasya prathamapāde
`tathāliṅga'mityadhikaraṇe advaramīmāṃsākutūharavṛttāvavocāma. trividhamapi etalliṅgaṃ
jātivyaktivatprātipadikārtha eva. pratyayārthatve prādhānyāpattau ajā, khaṭvā
ityādau strītvaviśiṣṭatādātmyāvacchinnā'jādibodho'nubhavasiddho virudhyeta. kiṃca
mātṛduhitṛsvasṛgavādiśabdeṣu vināpi ṭābādipratyayaṃ strītvaviśiṣṭārthasya
bodhātprātipadikasya tatra śaktyāvaśyakatve ṭābādīnāmapi śaktikalpane gauravam.
`ṛkārāntāmātṛduhitṛsvasṛyātṛnanāndaraḥ, prāvṛḍ?vipruḍa\ufffdktiviṣaḥ'
ityāda#iliṅgānuśāsanasūtrāṇyapi prakṛtiviṣayāṇyeva dṛśyante. ata eva ca
`kṛdikārādaktinaḥ' ityatra `aktina' ityatadarthavat. anyathā ktinaiva
strītvasyoktatvānṅīpo'prāptestadvaiyathryaṃ spaṣṭameva. na caivamapi
prakṛtyaiva strītvasyoktatvātkathaṃ ṭābādaya #iti vācyaṃ,
dvāvityādivatprakṛtyuktasyā'vyāvartakatvāt. anyathā ṭābādividhivaiyathryāt.
tathā ca strītvamiha prātipadikasyaiva vācyaṃ. ṭābādayastu taddyotakāḥ. tathāca
ṭābādiṣu satsu avaśyaṃ strītvabodha iti niyamaḥ, natu ṭābādiṣu satsveveti niyama
iti. "ayaṃ padārthaḥ," "iyaṃ vyaktiḥ", "idaṃ vastu" iti vyavahārasya sārvatrikatvāt. taccedaṃ liṅgamarthaniṣṭhameva. taduktaṃ bhāṣye--"ekārthe śabdānyatvāddṛṣṭaṃ liṅgānyatvamavayavānyatvācce"ti. ekasminnevārthe "puṣyaḥ" "tārakā" "nakṣatra"miti śabdanānātvadarśanāt, kuṭīkuṭīrādau rephādyavayavopajanane liṅgabhedadarśanācca stanakeśādyatiriktameva liṅgamityartha iti kaiyaṭaḥ. "puliṅgaḥ śabda" ityādivyavahārastu vācyavācakayorabhedopacāradbodhyaḥ. naca upacayādidharmāṇāṃ viruddhatvādekatra samāveśā'yogādekasya dvitriliṅgatā'nāpattiriti vācyam, ekaikasminvastuni kṣaṇabhedena trayāṇāṃ dharmāṇāmapi samāveśopapatteḥ. uktaṃca bhāṣye-"kaścidapi sattvādidharma kvacinmuhurtamapi nāvatiṣṭhate, yāvadanena varddhitavyamapāyena vā yujyate" iti nacaivaṃ sati yugapaddvitriliṅgatvānāpattiriti vācyam, nahi vyavahāre svasamakālikapadārthasattā prayojikā. tathā sati bhūtabhaviṣyadvyavahārocchedāpātāt. tatra kaścicchabda ekaliṅgaviśiṣṭa evārthe prayojyaḥ, kaścittu dviliṅge, kaścittu triliṅge ityetattu liṅgānuśāsanaśāstrādavagantavyam. eṣāṃ puṃstrīnapuṃsakaśabdānāṃ vṛddhyādiśabdavadasmin śāstre saṃketaśca liṅgānuśāsanata eva jñeyaḥ. uktaṃ ca bhāṣye-avaśyaṃ tāvatkaścitsvakṛtānta āstheyaḥ" iti vaiyakaraṇasiddhānta ityarthaḥ. "kṛtāntau yamasiddhāntau" ityamaraḥ. tatra ṭighubhādisaṃjñāvallaghusaṃjñāmakṛtvā mahāsaṃjñākaraṇasāmathryātsati saṃbhave "stanakeśavatī"tyādilaukikaṃ liṅgamapyatrāśrīyate. anyathā "paśunā yajete "tyatra strīvyaktāvapi sattvādyupacayātmakapuṃstvādyanapāyādāṅonā'striyāmiti nābhāvasyā'virodhātstrīpaśurapyālabhyeta. tadetaccaturthasya prathamapāde "tathāliṅga"mityadhikaraṇe advaramīmāṃsākutūharavṛttāvavocāma. trividhamapi etalliṅgaṃ jātivyaktivatprātipadikārtha eva. pratyayārthatve prādhānyāpattau ajā, khaṭvā ityādau strītvaviśiṣṭatādātmyāvacchinnā'jādibodho'nubhavasiddho virudhyeta. kiṃca mātṛduhitṛsvasṛgavādiśabdeṣu vināpi ṭābādipratyayaṃ strītvaviśiṣṭārthasya bodhātprātipadikasya tatra śaktyāvaśyakatve ṭābādīnāmapi śaktikalpane gauravam.
