pākānukūlakṛtyāśrayaṃ devadattaṃ paśyetyādyarthasvīkāre doṣā'bhāvaditi vācyaṃ,
nāmārthayorbhedānvayasya svaparasiddhāntaviruddhatvāt. na caivaṃ
nāmārthayoramedasaṃsargavyutpattyanurodhena, śatṛśānajājīnāṃ kartari śaktistibādīnāṃ
tu kṛtāveveti vaiṣamyaṃ svīkriyate, prāmāṇikagauravasyā'doṣatvāditi vācyaṃ,
`sthānyeva vācako lāghavānna tvādeśo gauravā'diti svasiddhātantasya parityāgāpatteḥ.
`rāmaḥ', `jñānaṃ', `katara'dityādau sorvisarge sorami soradaḍi ca kṛte lāghavātsutvanaiva
śaktirna tu tattadrūpeṇetyādibhavadīyavyavahārasyā'sāṅgatyāpatteśca. evaṃ ca

sa ca śatrādyante kartari śakta ityabhyupagame tiṅante kathaṃ kṛtiṃ bodhayet ?.
`anyāyaścā'nekārthatva'miti nyāyāt. yadi ta#u vaiyākaraṇarītimāśritya sarvatrādeśā
eva vācakā ityādyabhyupagamyate tarhi– ghaṭaṃ, ghaṭena, hare'va, viṣṇo'vetyādiṣu `sarve
sarvapadādeśāḥ' iti nyāyena padasphoṭo vākyasphoṭaśca sidhyediti bhavatāṃ
tanmahadaniṣṭam. kiṃ ca `kartari kṛ'diti yatkartṛgrahaṇaṃ tadeva `laḥ karmaṇī'ti sūtre
cakāreṇānukṛṣyata iti kathaṃ ṇvulādīnāṃ lakārāṇāṃ ca śaktau vailakṣaṇyam?. na ca
nāmārthayorabhedānvayasaṃsargābhyapagama eva ṇvulādau karturvācyatve bījamiti vācyaṃ,
`pacatirūpaṃ pacatikalpaṃ devadatta' ityādyanurodhena tiṅkṣvapi kartureva
vācyataucityāt. nanu samudāyasya nāmatve'pi tiṅpratyayo na nāmeti cet, pācaka
ityatrāpyaka ityetanna nāmeti tulyam. akāntaṃ nāmeti cedrūpabādyantamapi nāmeti
tulyam. tataścātra praśastapākakartā devadatta ityādyabhedānvayo
bhavadbhirabhyupagantavya iti tiṅkṣvapi karturvācyatā svīkatrvayaiva. kiṃ ca
karturvācyatvā'nabhyupagame `yuṣmadi samānādhikaraṇe madhyamaḥ' `asmadyuttamaḥ' iti
sāmānādhikaraṇyaprayuktā puruṣavyavasthā, `abhihite kartari prathame'tyādikaṃ ca bavanmate
kathaṃ saṅgacchatām?. yattu anabhihita ityasyānabhihitasaṅkhyāka ityarthavarṇanena `devadattaḥ
pacatyodanam', `odanaḥ pacyate devadattene'tyādau prathamādvitīyādivyavasthāpanamuktaṃ,
tanna, kṛttaddhitasamāseṣu saṅkhyābhidhānasyā'prasiddhatvāt. tataśca
`paktakavyastaṇ?ḍulaḥ', `śatyaḥ śatiko'\ufffdāḥ', `prāptodako grāmaḥ' ityādiṣu
`karmaṇi dvitīye'tyasya pravṛttau prathamā na syāt. na ca `tiṣṭhatī'tyadhyāhāreṇa
saṅkhyābidhānamihāpyastīti vācyaṃ, `sthita' ityādyadhyāhāre tadabhāvāt.
`śābdiko'yaṃ devadatto na tu naiyāyika' ityādiṣu `nīlamidaṃ na tu rakta'mityatreva
kriyāpadā[dya]dhyāhārasyā'nāvaśyakatayā ākhyātena, `śabdadarduraṃ karotī'ti
ṭhakpratyayena vā kartṛsaṅkhyāyā anuktatvāddevadatte kartari
tṛtīyotpattiprasaṅgācca. tasmādanabhihite kartarītyādi vyākhyānamevābhyupetavyam.
api ca dhātūpāttavyāpārāśrayaḥ kartā, tatrāśrayamātraṃ kṛtāṃ lakārāṇāṃ cārtho na tu
vyāpāro'pi, tasya dhātunaiva labdhatvāt. ata eva kartā kāraka ityādau
prakṛtipratyayārthayornā'nanvayaḥ, vyāpārāśrayasya pratyayārthatve tu tasya
prakṛtyarthena vyāpāraemānvayaḥ kliṣṭaḥ syāt. yastu vadati– `kṛdātoḥ kṛtirarthaḥ,
kṛtpratyayasyāpi kṛtāveva śaktirna tu kartari. `kartari kṛ'dityatraṃ hi kartarīti
bhāvapradhāno nirdeśaḥ. kartṛtvaṃ kṛtimattvam. tacca kṛtirevāyatra tu
devadattādipadasamabhivyāhārastatra tṛjādau kṛtimati lakṣaṇe' ityādi, tanmate
pūrvoktakartetyādau sutarāmananvayaḥ. `karmavatkarmaṇe'ti sūtre karotirutpādanārthaḥ,
utpattiśca karmasthā, yatnārthakatve tu `kariṣyate ghaṭa' ityādi na siddhyediti
vakṣyamāṇadūṣaṇaṃ ca duruddharam. āśrayamātrasya pratyayārthatve tu `ratho
gacchatī'tyatra rathasyācetanasya yatnābhāve'pi
gamanānukūlacakrabhramaṇādivyāpārāśrayatvānna kācidanupapattiḥ. evaṃ sthite kṛtau
śaktirityāsyoktisaṃbhava eva nāsti, kṛterapi vyāpāraviśeṣatayā prāyeṇa dhātuta eva
lābhāt. jānātītyādāvāśrayatvaṃ pratyayasyārtha iti svīkṛtya yatnārthatvasya
tvayāpi vaktavyatvāt. nahi yatnamantareṇa jñānaṃ nodetīti kaścidabhyupaiti.
tasmātkṛtāṃ tiṅāṃ ca vailakṣaṇyaṃ durlabhamiti katrrarthakatvamabhyupeyam. etena
katrradhikaraṇe ākhyātavācyatvaṃ karturnirasya jañjabhyamānādhikaraṇe yaṅantādvihitasya
jañjamāna iti sānacaḥ kartṛvācakatvaṃ svīkurvanto mīmāṃsakā api prayuktāḥ. yattu
tairuktaṃ- `śānajaṃśe`kartari kṛ'diti vyākaraṇaṃ śaktigrāhakamastī'ti. tanna.
kṛdvākyaśeṣo hrayamarthākāṅkṣāyāmanirdiṣṭārtheṣu ṇvulādiṣvevopatiṣṭhate

ityādiprayogo na syāt. yattu bhaṭṭapādā āhuḥ— `kartari yadekatvaṃ tatra tip,
kartari yaddvitvaṃ tatra tasityādikrameṇa `laḥ karmaṇī'tyasya
`dvyekayo'rityādeścaikavākyatayā vyākhyānānna kartṛvācyatā sūtrādāyātī'ti.
tañcintyam. `tānyekavacanadvivacane'ti vihitadvivacanādisaṃjñā hi
tibādyādeśaniṣṭhā. tataśca dvivacanādisaṃjñākatibādividhinā

yatra kartṛgrahaṇaṃ tatra saṅkhyopasthāpakamasti, lakārasya
dvivacanādisaṃjñāvinirmuktatvāt. tataśca `kartari yadekatva'miti vyākhyā kathamapi na
saṃbhavatyeva. syādetat– `laḥ karmaṇī'ti sūtre `la' ityakārānubandhakayorlaṅlaṭoḥ
sāmānyagrahaṇaṃ na bhavati, kintūtsṛṣṭānubandhakalakārāṇāṃ sāmānyagrahaṇamiti
nirvivādam. tatra `la' iti jasantaṃ mābhūt. kiṃ tu ṅasantamastu `laḥ

tathā ca lasya sthāneya ādeśaḥ sa sakarmakātkarmaṇi kartari ca [yadekatvaṃ tatra]
syādakarmakādbhāve kartari cetyādyarthaḥ sulabha iti bhaṭṭapādoktyojanikānirbādhaiveti

haradattaḥ. `atyantā'vidyamānakarmakāmāmeva grahaṇaṃ, `neha, pacyate' ityādau tu
karmaṇyeva lakāraḥ. gamyamānatvācca karma na prayujyate' iti matāntaram. etacca
`gatibuddhī'tyādisūtre haradattagrante spaṣṭam. yattu kaiściduktam– iha
`avivakṣitakarmaṇāṃ bhāve lakāra iti prasādakṛtoktaṃ bhāṣyādivirodhādayukta' miti,
taccintyam, pakṣadvyasyāpi bhāṣyakaiyakaṭādigranthārūḍhatvāt.
pratyutā'vivakṣitakarmāṇo'pyakarmakā iti pakṣa eva prabalaḥ. tathāhi `samānakartṛkeṣu
tumu'nniti sūtre icchatā kriyata iti bhāve laḍukto haradattena. `ṇeradhyayane

"ṇeradhyayane vṛtta"mitisūtre kaiyaṭa haradattādibhirapi "napuṃsake bhāve kto'karmakebhya eva, "tayoreva kṛtyakte"tyatra kṛnmātrasya grahaṇāt, tatra bhāvecā'karmakebhya ityanuvartanāt, anyathā ghaṭaṃ kṛtamiti prasajyete"ti siddhāntitam. evaṃ sthite yadyavivakṣitakarmaṇo'pīha sūtre'karmakagrahaṇena na gṛhreran, tarhi pītā gāvo bhuktā brāāhṛṇā ityādau bhāve ktāntādarśa ādyajityādi niṣṭhādiprakaraṇe svayameva vakṣyamāṇam, "ādikarmaṇi ktaḥ" iti sūtre haradattena vakṣyamāṇaṃ, kṛtapūrvītyatra bhāve kta iti kaiyaṭādyuktaṃ ca kathaṃ saṅgacchet?. kathaṃ ca "gataṃ tiraścīna" mityādiprayogāḥ saṅgaccheran?. "gatibuddhī"ti sūtre tvakarmakagrahaṇenā'vivakṣitakarmake"ti sūtre'pi na gṛhrante,tena hi sūtreṇa kartaryapi kto vidhīyata iti dattavānpakvavānityādyarthe dattaḥ pakva ityādyāpatteḥ. iha sūtre tvivakṣitakarmaṇākarmakatvena grahaṇe na ko'pi doṣa ityāstāṃ tāvat.
