pṛt पृत्

Definition: Denote, in the Rigveda and later, ‘contest,’ whether in arms or in the chariot race. Pṛtanā has also the concrete sense of ‘ army ’ in some passages; in the Epic system it denotes a definite body of men, elephants, chariots, and horses. Pṛtanājya has only the sense of ‘ combat.
