jyā Is the regular word for ‘bowstring’ in the Rigveda and later. The making of bowstrings was a special craft, as is shown by the occurrence of the Jj'ā-kāra, or ‘ maker of bowstrings,’ among the victims at the Purusamedha, or human sacrifice, in the Yajurveda. The bowstring consisted of a thong of οχ-hide. It was not usually kept taut, but was specially tightened when the bow was to be used. The sound of the bowstring (jyā-ghosa) is referred to in the Atharvaveda. Cf. Ártnī.
jyāhroḍa Occurs in the description of the arms of the Vrātya in the Pañcavimśa Brāhmana, and is also mentioned in the Sūtras. The sense is somewhat obscure, for one Sūtra describes it as a ‘bow not meant for use’ (ayogyam dhaηus), while the other speaks of it as a ‘bow without an arrow’ (dhaηuska aηisu). Some sort of a bow, therefore, seems to be meant.
jyaiṣṭhineya Denotes, in combination with Jyestha, the eldest,’ a ‘son of the father’s first wife’ (jyesthā), in the Brāhmanas.
jyākā Means ‘bowstring,’with a contemptuous sense, in the Rigveda, and in the simple sense in the Atharvaveda.
jyāpāśa Means ‘bowstring’ in the Atharvaveda.
jyeṣṭha Ordinarily meaning ‘ greatest,’ has further the specific sense of ‘ eldest ’ brother in the Rigveda. It also means the eldest among sons, which is another side of the same sense.
jyeṣṭha See Naksatra.
jyeṣṭhaghnī Slaying the eldest,’ is the name of a Naksatra, or lunar mansion, usually called Jyesthā, in the Atharvaveda and the Taittirīya Brāhmana. It is Antares or Cor Scipioηis.
jyotiṣa Astronomy.’ It is important to note that no reference to any work on astronomy occurs in the Samhitās or Brāhmanas. The text which claims to represent the astronomical science of the Veda has been edited by Weber, and has frequently been discussed since. Its date is unknown, but is undoubtedly late, as is shown alike by the contents and form of the work.
ajyeyatā See Brāhmaṇa.
ājya See Ghrta
ketu vajya ('descendant of Vāja’) is mentioned as a teacher in the Vamśa Brāhmana.
daśapuruṣaṃrājya Occurring in the śatapatha çrāhmana, doubtless means ‘ sovereignty inherited through ten ancestors/ a striking case of hereditary rule. Weber once rendered the word as the £ kingdom of Daśapuru,’ comparing the Daśapura of Kālidāsa’s Meghadūta and the Daśārna of the ‘ middle country.’
paramajyā ‘Of supreme power,’ is understood by Ludwig in one passage of the Rigveda as the proper name of a great man among the Yadus. But it is doubtful whether the word is more than an epithet.
pṛṣadājya Denotes ‘sprinkled butter’—that is, butter (Ajya) mixed with sour milk, in the Rigveda and later.
brahmajya Oppressor of a Brahmin and Brahma-jyeya, ‘oppression of a Brahmin/ are terms mentioned several times in the Atharvaveda as expressing a heinous crime which involves its perpetrator in ruin. See Brāhmaṇa.
bhujyu Denotes, according to the St. Petersburg Dictionary, an adder ’ in two passages of the Rigveda, and one of the Vājasaneyi Samhitā. But the sense is uncertain in all these passages.
bhujyu Is the name of a man, son of Tugra, who is repeatedly mentioned in the Rigveda as saved from the deep Búhler, the passages refer to Bhujyu being saved from shipwreck during a voyage in the Indian Ocean, but the evidence is inadequate to support this conclusion. Cf. Samudra.
bhujyu lāhyāyani (‘Descendant of Lahyāyana ’) is the name of a teacher, a contemporary of Yājflavalkya, in the Bṛhad- āraṇyaka Upaniṣad (iii. 3, 1).
bhaiṣajya In the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa and the Nirukta denotes ‘healing remedy’ or ‘medicine,’ like Bheṣaja.
bhaujya In the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa denotes the rank of a prince bearing the title of Bhoja.
māhārājya The dignity of a great king ’ (mahā-rāja), is mentioned in the Aitareya Brāhmana.
jyā (scil. ṛc, ‘verse’) denotes the words uttered at the moment of offering the sacrifice, ‘consecrating sacrificial formula,’ in the later Samhitās and the Brāhmaṇas
jya In the Atharvaveda and later regularly denotes ‘sovereign power,’ from which, as the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa notes, the Brahmin is excluded. In addition to Rājya, the texts give other expressions of sovereign power. Thus the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa4 contends that the Rājasūya sacrifice is that of a king, the Vājapeya that of a Samrāj or emperor, the status of the latter (Sāmrājya) being superior to that of the former (Rājya). The sitting on a throne (Ásandī) is given in the same text6 as one of the characteristics of the Samrāj. Elsewhere® Svārājya, ‘ uncon¬trolled dominion,’ is opposed to Rājya. In the ritual of the Rājasūya the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa7 gives a whole series of terms: Rājya, Sāmrājya, Bhaujya, Svārājya, Vairājya, Pāra- meṣṭhya, and Māhārājya, while Adhipatya, ‘ supreme power,’ is found elsewhere.8 But there is no reason to believe that these terms refer to essentially different forms of authority. A king might be called a Mahārāja or a Samrāj, without really being an overlord of kings; he would be so termed if he were an important sovereign, or by his own entourage out of compliment,' as was Janaka of Videha. That a really great monarchy of the Aśoka or Gupta type ever existed in the Vedic period seems highly improbable.
vaṇijyā In the Brāhmaṇas denotes the business of a merchant (Vaṇij) ‘ trade.’
jya ‘Descendant of Vāja,’ is the patronymic of Ketu in the Vamśa Brāhmaṇa.
vairājya See Rājya.
sāmrājya See Samrāj and Rājya.
svārājya See Rājya.

jyotsnā(Ι)name of a commentary by Rāmacandra possibly belonging to the 18th century on the Vājasaneyi Prātiśākhya; (2) name of a commentary on Nāgeśa's 'Laghuśabdenduśekhara by Udayaṃakara Pāṭhaka of Vārāṇasi in the 18th century.
jyapādaoriginally a title, but mostly used in connection with the famous Jain grammarian देवनन्दिन् whose work on grammar called जैनेन्द्रव्याकरण is well-known: see देवनन्दिन्.
prayojyathat which is employed or incited or urged; the word which is the subject in the primitive construction and becomes an object in the causal construction, and as a result, which is put in the accusative case being प्रयोज्यकर्म. As, however, the प्रयोज्यकर्म originally occupies the place of the subject in the primitive construction, the term प्रयोज्यकर्ता ( प्रयोज्यश्चासौ कर्ता च ) is often used in connection with it, as contrasted with the term प्रयोजककर्ता which is used with respect to the subject in the causal construction; confer, compare इह च भेदिका देवदत्तस्य यज्ञदत्तस्य काष्ठानामिति प्रयोज्ये कर्तरि षष्ठी न प्राप्नोति । M.Bh. on P. III. 1.26 Vart. l ; confer, compare also Kaiy. on P. I. 2.65.
prasajyapratiṣedhaprohibition of the possible application of a rule, generally laid down by the use of the negative particle न, together with, or connected with, a verbal activity: e.g न लुमताङ्गस्य P.I.1.63, नामि P.VI. 4.3, न माङ्योगे VI.4.74 et cetera, and others etc: confer, compare प्रसज्यप्रतिषेधोSयं क्रियया सह यत्र नञ्; confer, comparealso प्रसज्यायं क्रियागुणौ ततः पश्चान्निवृतिं करोति M.Bh. on P.II.2.6. In some cases the negative particle in a compound has also to be taken as stating a negation by प्रसज्यप्रतिषेधः;confer, compare M.Bh. on सुडनपुंसकस्य P.1.1.43, सार्वधातुकमपित् I.4.2, चादयोsसत्त्वे I. 4. 57.
vibhajyānvākhyānaa method of forming a word, or of arriving at the complete form of a word by putting all the constituent elements of the word such as the base, the affix, the augment, the modification, the . accent, et cetera, and others one after another and then arriving at the form instead of completing the formation stage by stage; e. g. in arriving at the form स्नौघ्नि the wording स्नौघ्न + अ +ई is to be considered as it stands and not स्नौघ्न + अ = स्नौघ्न and then स्नौघ्न +ई. The विभज्यान्वाख्यानपक्ष in connection with the formation of a word corresponds to the पदसंस्कारपक्ष in connection with the formation of a sentence.
jainendravyākaraṇaname of a grammar work written by Pujyapada Devanandin, also called Siddhanandin, in the fifth century A.D. The grammar is based on the Astadhyay of Panini, the section on Vedic accent and the rules of Panini explaining Vedic forms being,of course, neglectedition The grammar is called Jainendra Vyakarana or Jainendra Sabdanusasana. The work is available in two versions, one consisting of 3000 sutras and the other of 3700 sutras. it has got many commentaries, of which the Mahavrtti written by Abhayanandin is the principal one.
