On this she cursed the youth, who in return cursed her that she should become the wife of a Kṣatriya (See कच.) Once upon a time Devayānī and her companion Śarmiṣṭhā, the daughter of Vṛiṣaparvan, the king of the Daityas, went to bathe keeping their clothes on the shore. But the god Wind changed their clothes, and when they were dressed they began to quarrel about the change until Śarmiṣṭhā, so far lost her temper that she, slapped Devayānī's face, and threw her into a well. There she remained until she was seen and rescued by Yayāti, who, with the consent of her father, married her, and Śarmiṣṭhā became her servant as a recompense for her insulting conduct towards her. Devayānī lived happily with Yayāti for some years and bore him two sons, Yadu and Turvasu. Aggrieved at this, Devayānī went to her father and complained of the conduct of her husband, on whom, therefore, Śukra inflicted premature infirmity and old age. Yayāti, however, propitiated him and obtained from him permission to transfer his decrepitude to any one who would consent to take it. He asked his five sons, but all refused except Puru, the youngest. Yayāti accordingly transferred his infirmity to Puru, and being once more in the prime of youth, passed his time in the enjoyment of sensual pleasures. This he did for 1 years, and yet his desire was not satisfied. At last, however, with a vigorous effort he renounced his sensual life, restored his youth to Puru, and having made him successor to the throne, repaired to the woods to lead a pious life and meditate upon the Supreme Spirit.]

ayāsya áñgirasa This sage appears to be mentioned in two passages of the Rigveda, and the Anukramanī ascribes to him several hymns of the Rigveda. In the Brāhmana tradition he was Udgātr at the Rājasūya or Royal Inauguration Sacrifice, at which Sunahśepa was to have been slain, and his Udgītha (Sāmaveda chant) is referred to elsewhere. He is also referred to several times as a ritual authority. In the Vamśas, or Genealogies of the Brhadaran• yaka Upanisad, he is named as the pupil of Abhūti Tvāstra.
āpayā Is the name of a river mentioned once only in the Rigveda, when it occurs between the Drsadvatī and the Sarasvatī. Ludwig was inclined to identify it with the Apagā as a name for the Ganges, but Zimmer correctly places it near the Sarasvatī, either as the small tributary which flows past Thānesar or the modern Indramatī farther west, while Pischel4 assigns it to Kuruksetra, of which the Apayā is mentioned as a famous river in the Mahābhārata.
ubhayādant Having incisors in both jaws,’ is an expression employed to distinguish, among domestic animals, the horse, the ass, etc., from the goat, the sheep, and cattle. The distinction occurs in a late hymn of the Rigveda, and is several times alluded to in the later Samhitās and the Brāhmanas. In one passage of the Taittirīya Samhitā man is classed with the horse as ubhciyā-dant. The opposite is anyato-dant, * having incisors in one jaw only,’ a term regularly applied to cattle, the eight incisors of which are, in fact, limited to the lower jaw. The ass is styled ubhayā-dant in the Atharvaveda. In one passage of the Atharvaveda, however, the epithet is applied to a ram ; but the sense here is that a marvel occurs, just as in the Rigveda a ram destroys a lioness. Bloomfield suggests in the Atharvaveda passage another reading which would mean ‘ horse.’ A parallel division of animals is that of the Taittirīya and Vājasaneyi Samhitās into * whole-hoofed ’ (eka-śapha) and ‘ small ’ (ksudra). Zimmer seeks to show from the Greek άμψώδοντα and the Latin ambidens that the Indo-European was familiar with the division of the five sacrificial animals into the two classes of man and horse on the one hand, and cattle, sheep, and goats on the other. But this supposition is not necessary.
ekayāvan gāṃdama Is a man mentioned in the Pañcavimśa Brāhmana and the Taittirīya Brāhmana.
kaurayāna Is apparently a patronymic of Pākasthāman in the Rigveda. Hopkins suggests that Kaurāyana may be meant.
tayādara Is the name of an animal only mentioned in the adjectival form tayādara along with Parasvant, ‘ wild ass ’ in the Atharvaveda.
tūrvayāṇa Is the name of a prince mentioned in the Rigveda. He appears by name in two passages, and is clearly alluded to in a third, as an enemy of Atithigva, Ayu, and Kutsa. With this accords the fact that the Pakthas were opposed in the battle of the ten kings to the Trtsus, and that Tūrvayāna is shown by another passage of the Rigveda to have been a prince of the Pakthas. He is there represented as having been a protśge of Indra, who aided him against Cyavāna and his guardians, the Maruts. It is not probable that he is identical with Suśravas.
pākasthāman kaurayāṇa Is celebrated as a generous donor in a hymn of the Rigveda. Ludwig suggests, without much reason, that he may have been a king of the Anus.
pṛkṣayāma Occurs once in the plural in the Rigveda. Roth suggests the sense of ‘faring with swift steeds,’ and thinks a proper name is meant. Pischel holds that the word is an epithet of the Pajras, and that it means ‘ performing splendid sacrifices.’
yayāti Is mentioned twice in the Rigveda, once as an ancient sacrificer, and once as Nahuṣya, ‘descendant of Nahuça,’ apparently a king. There is no trace whatever of his connexion with Pūru, as in the Epic, the tradition of which must be deemed to be inaccurate.
yayāti Is mentioned twice in the Rigveda, once as an ancient sacrificer, and once as Nahuṣya, ‘descendant of Nahuṣa,’ apparently a king. There is no trace whatever of his connexion with Pūru, as in the Epic, the tradition of which must be deemed to be inaccurate.
vayā In the Rigveda denotes the ‘branch ’ of a tree.
vṛcayā Is referred to once in the Rigveda as the spouse given by the Aśvins to Kakṣīvant.
śatayātu (‘Having a hundred magic powers’) is the name of a Rṣi in the Rigveda. He is enumerated after Parāśara and before Vasiṣtha. Geldner thinks he may have been a son of Vasiṣtha.
śayāṇdaka Is the form in the Taittirīya Samhitā of the name of an animal which in the Maitrāyaṇī and Vājasaneyi Samhitās is written as śayaṇdaka. Some sort of bird is meant according to Roth, but the commentator on the Taittirīya Sarphitā equates the word with Kpkalāsa, ‘chameleon.’
harayāṇa In the Rigveda is clearly the name of a man mentioned along with Uksaṇyāyana and Suṣāman.
hṛdayāmaya ‘Disease of the heart,’ is mentioned in the Atharvaveda in connexion with Yakṣma and with Balāsa. Zimmer, who thinks that Balāsa is consumption, connects the name with the later view of the medical Samhitās, that love is one of the causes of the disease. But it would be more natural to see in it a disease affecting the heart.
