śākalya शाकल्य

Definition: name of an ancient grammarian and Vedic scholar who is supposed to have revised the Vedic texts and written their Pada-pātha. He is often quoted by Pāṇini and the writers of the Prātiśākhya works: cf. शाकल्यस्य संहितामनुप्रावर्षत् M. Bh. on P.I.4.84; also on P.I.1.18, IV.1.18; cf. also उपचारं लक्षणतश्च सिद्धं अाचार्या व्यालिशाकल्यगार्ग्या: R.Pr.XIII.12.
