parṇa Denotes the ‘wing’ of a bird in the Rigveda and later. It also means the feather ’ of an arrow in a late passage of the Rigveda, and more often later ; and the leaf’ of a tree from the Rigveda onwards.
parṇa Denotes the tree Butea froηdosa, later usually called Palāśa. It occurs in the Rigveda in connexion with the Aśvattha, and with that tree as well as the Nyagrodha in the Atharvaveda, which mentions both amulets and the cover of sacrificial dishes as made from its wood. Its use for the making of sacrificial implements like the ladle (juhu), or sacrificial posts, or the small ladle called sruva, is mentioned. The Taittirīya Samhitā ascribes its origin to the loss of a feather by the Gāyatrī when winning the Soma. The tree is also often mentioned elsewhere. Reference too is sometimes made to its bark (parna-valka).
parṇadhi In the Atharvaveda denotes the part of the shaft in which the feather of the arrow is fastened.
parṇaka Is the name of a man included in the list of victims at the Purusamedha (‘human sacrifice’) in the Vājasaneyi Samhitā and the Taittirīya Brāhmana. According to Mahī- dhara, a Bhilla is meant—i.e., presumably a wild hillman, for he glosses Nisāda in the same way. Sāyana explains the word as meaning ‘ one who catches fish by putting over the water a parna with poison,’ but this is apparently a mere etymological guess. Weber’s rendering of the term as referring to a savage ‘wearing feathers ’ is ingenious, but uncertain.
parṇaya Is the name in two passages of the Rigveda either of a hero, as Ludwig thinks,or of a demon overcome by Indra.
ṛtuparṇa Appears in a Brāhmana-like passage of the Baudh- āyana śrauta Sūtra as son of Bhañgāśvina and king of Saphāla. In the Apastamba Srauta Sūtra are mentioned Rtuparna-Kayovadhī Bhañgyaśvinau.
raikvaparṇa Masc. plur., is the name of a locality in the Mahāvpṣa country according to the Chāndogya Upanisad.
śyāmaparṇa Is, in the Kāthaka and Maitrāyaṇī Samhitās, the name of a man who was instructed by Somadakça Kauśreya.
suparṇa ‘Well-winged,’ designates a large bird of prey, the ‘eagle’ or the ‘vulture,’ in the Rigveda and later. In the passages in which it appears as an eater of carrion it must be the vulture. The Jaiminiya Brāhmaṇa mentions an eagle which separates milk from water like the Kruftc. In the Rigveda the Suparṇa is said to be the child of the śyena, and is distinguished from the latter in another passage: this led Zimmer to think that the falcon is probably meant. The Atharvaveda alludes to its cry, and describes it as living in the hills.
suparṇa Is personified in the Yajurveda Saηnhitās as a Rṣi.
srekaparṇa In the Brāhmaṇas1 seems to mean 'like the oleander leaf.’
