māna As a measure of weight is said to be the equivalent of the Kpçṇala or Raktikā that is, the berry of the Guñjā (Abrus precatorius). It occurs in compounds in the later Samhitās and the Brāhmaṇas.
māna Is the name of a man occurring in several passages of the Rigveda. In one place express mention is made of his son (sūnu), by whom, despite Bergaigne’s view to the contrary, Agfastya must be meant. In another passage, apparently the same meaning applies to Māna that is, Agastya as ‘a Māna.’ In a third passage the expression sūnave Mānena has been held by Sieg to be an inversion of Mānasya sūnimā, ‘by the son of Māna’ i.e., Agastya; but it seems more likely that either sūnor Māna is the fuller form of Agastya’s name (‘pride of the son,’ with reference to his high ancestry), or that the son of Māna ( = Agastya) is alluded to as interested in Viśpalā. The Mānas—that is, the descendants of Māna, are in several passages alluded to as singers. Cf. Mānya, Māndārya.
mānava ‘Descendant of Manu,’ is the patronymic of Nābha- nediçtha and of śāryāta.
māna ‘Descendant of Manu,’ is the patronymic of the mythical Idā (‘ oblation ’) in the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, and of a woman named Parśu in the Rigveda.
abhyāvartin cāyamāna Appears in a Dānastuti (‘ Praise of Gifts ’) in the Rigveda, and as conqueror of the Vrcīvants under the leader Varaśikha. It is probable, though not absolutely certain, that he is identical with the Srñjaya Daivavāta, mentioned in the same hymn as having the Turvaśas and Vrcīvants defeated for him by Indra. In this case he would be prince (samrāj) of the Syñjayas. Daivavāta is mentioned elsewhere as a worshipper of Agni. Abhyāvartin is also referred to as a Pārthava. Ludwig and Hillebrandt maintained that he is thus a Parthian, the latter using the evidence of the two places mentioned in the descrip¬tion of Daivavāta’s victories, Hariyūpīyā and Yavyāvatī, as proofs for the western position of Abhyāvartin’s people in Arachosia, in Iran. But Zimmer is probably right in holding that the name Pārthava merely means ‘ a descendant of Prthu,’ and that its similarity to the Iranian Parthians is only on a par with the numerous other points of identity between the Indian and Iranian cultures
cāyamāna Is the patronymic in the Rigveda of Abhyāvartin.
devaka mānyamāna (‘Descendant of Manyamāna ’) appears in the Rigveda as an opponent of the Trtsus, and as connected with Sambara. Possibly, however, as Grassmann suggests, the words should be understood as denoting Sambara, who deemed himself a god,’ devaka being used contemptuously.
pavamāna Is a term very frequently applied in the Rigveda to the Soma ‘purifying itself’ by running through the sieve. Later it appears in a few passages1 in the sense of ‘ wind ’ (as a. purifier).
bhayamāna Is, according to Sāyaṇa, the name of a man in one hymn of the Rigveda, which is ascribed by the Anukra- maṇī (Index) to his authorship. The interpretation is, however, uncertain.
mānyamāna Occurs with the word Devaka in the Rigveda. The word seems to be a patronymic from Manyamāna, meaning ‘son of the proud one.’ Roth renders the two words ‘the godling, the proudling (hast thou smitten).’
śatamāna See Māna and Kṛṣṇala.
samāna See Prāṇa.
samānagotra Mean ‘belonging to the same family ’ and ‘ class ’ respectively in the Brāhmaṇas. Samāna-bandhu, ‘ having the same kin,’ is found in the Rigveda.
sahamāna Is the name of a plant in the Atharvaveda.
